Shallow Ground Water Management with a Modified Subsurface Drainage System

Abstract:

An existing subsurface drainage system was modified to control the flow from the drain laterals and to control the water table depth on a portion of the field. Tomatoes and cotton have been grown without any negative response. For the tomato crop, managing the water table resulted in less stress between irrigations and improved yields in the area with the shallowest ground water. The cotton crop obtained approximately 22% of its water requirement from the ground water. Use of this system has resulted in reductions in both drainage outflow and irrigation water applied.
