Abstract:

A large number of dams in the United States of America and elsewhere are reaching the limits of their design lives. Owners, agencies and environmentalists are either considering or demanding decommissioning of dams for economic andlor environmental reasons. This paper discusses the impacts that sediment deposited behind such dams will have when decommissioning occurs. These include increased flooding, and impacts on other infrastructure, navigation, water quality and aquatic life.
