Abstract:

System downstream control (SDC) has been developed to optimally and automaticaly control canal systems. The objective of system downstream control is to maintain a reference water depth (or target water depth) at the downstream end of each reach (or pool) and to satisfy user's water demands by adjusting the control gate structures and turnout structures based on optimal operational decisions (such as optimal gate openings). System downstream control has been evaluated using test cases set by the ASCE Task Committee on Canal Automation Algorithms (Kacerek et al. 1995). System downstream control has been tested by a flat canal under tuned and untuned conditions.
