Abstract:

Conakry is a zone that receives more precipitation than other countries in West Africa. Sometimes the quantity is more than 4,000 mm per year. Strong rainfalls are observed between July to September. Rainfall often causes important material damage and the death of many people. During the last 3 years from 1989 to 1991, we recorded the loss of 80 persons in the sea, 4 persons died by flood disaster, in addition to many road accidents and frequent perturbation of aircraft traffic. Abundant rainfall on August 15, 1990, between 6 a.m. to 12 o'clock is such a case. During this period, rainfall was 340 mm. On July 16, 1991, and July 10, 1992, rainfall of 471.8 mm and 195.5 mm was recorded. Rainfall is received on 27 days in July. In order to analyze the rainfall recorded in Conakry, we can say that Intertropical Convergence Zone plays an important part in the distribution over period. In this period, the air mass from low pressure blows from southwest to northeast and in this case the atmosphere is very rich in water vapor. The influence of topography causes many heavy showers in the costal area like Conakry.
