Mitigation of Predation at a Juvenile Bypass Outfall Site

Abstract:

Reducing predation at an outfall has become an increasingly important consideration in the design of a juvenile salmonid bypass system. To minimize the exposure juveniles have with predators in a tailrace a combination of strategic outfall siting and improvement of outfall plunge characteristics was implemented. The criteria and methodology used for locating the outfall sites within the Priest Rapids and Wanapum Dams tailraces is described. The development of a unique flow spreader, designed to decrease the initial plunge depth as well as increase the initial flow dispersion, is also presented.
