Abstract:

This paper discusses the dynamic characteristics of an open multi-pool irrigation canal from robustness point of view. In particular, the presence of right-half plane zeros in an open ioop control model H(s) is considered as a restriction to achieving a robust performance with a one degree feedback scheme. Therefore, the combination of control (input) and controlled (output) variables which prevent the introduction of this kind of zeros is sought. The number of right-half plane zeros of the canal control model was obtained using the Individual Channel Design method assuming known the canal frequency response. It was found that the selection of flow at the upstream end of the pool as control variable and water depth at the downstream end of the pooi as controlled variable reduced the coupling effects between the controlled pools. The use of flow at the downstream end of the pool as controlled variable reduced the robustness possibilities independent of the controller used.
