A Surface Collection Design Approach on the Lower Columbia River

Abstract:

Surface collection and bypass of downstream migrating juvenile salmon has the potential to help improve the survival of the Columbia River salmon population. However, surface passage on the Columbia presents major unknowns regarding design and operation. Time is of the essence. Under the direction of the Portland District, Corps of Engineers, a study was undertaken to develop and evaluate surface bypass alternatives at three Corps Lower Columbia River projects. The goal was to identity surface bypass systems with the most likely chance of success, to prepare feasibility designs, costs and schedules for these systems, to develop a program for testing and implementation, and to document the process for future reference.
