Abstract:

The de Saint Venant equations are solved as stochastic partial differential equations whose parameters (hydraulic resistance, bed slope, cross-section geometiy, inflow hydrograph, seepage, momentum correction coefficient, structural flow coefficients) are spatiotemporal random fields. Monte Carlo simulation, coupling multivariate generation of the random fields with finite difference approximation of the flow equations, is applied to a 10-km reach of the Columbia River. The substantial uncertainty in predicted flow velocity and flow depth along the reach would influence engineering decision making.
