Abstract:

In a previous work the Outer Approximation method was presented (Karatzas and Pinder, 1993 and 1996) for the solution of groundwater management problems where the selected pumping rates at the well locations were considered constant during the entire remediation period. In the present work the concept of a multiperiod remedi ation design is introduced. The basic concept of the Outer Approximation method remains unchanged as presented in the past and only a different approach is devel oped to introduce the decision variables (the pumping rates of all the management periods) into the optimization model. Specifically, herein the number of decision vari ables is equal to the product of the number of wells times the number of management periods and all the constraints are evaluated at the end of the remediation period. A hypothetical aquifer remediation scenario is considered where the obtained results of a single period are compared to those of a multiple period remecliation design.
