Abstract:

Consultants in Phoenix were recently charged with assessing the city's sewer system, many feet of which were laid without plastic lining to protect them. Developing a capital improvement plan meant finding the corroded sewers and then hitting upon the best method to repair (or replace) them. In 1992, the City of Phoenix began to assess the condition of its large-diameter, unlined concrete sewer pipes, a system which had become increasingly worn by hydrogen sulfide corrosion. Since the mid-1960s, new pipes in Phoenix have been cast with PVC in their walls as a prevention against degradation, but earlier pipes had no lining, unless it was installed in areas of high turbulence.
