Abstract:

The 201 Facilities Plan for Biosolids Management prepared for the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority (CCMUA) recommended in-vessel composting as the ultimate biosolids disposal method. The initial step in implementation of the recommended plan was the evaluation and selection of single in-vessel composting system and supplier. The result of the evaluation was the selection of a tunnel reactor composting system furnished by Ashbrook-Simon-Hartley. Site constraints were met by constructing a basement to house process equipment, a new feature for the tunnel reactor system. The final design consisted of 20 tunnel reactors and separate curing area. The composting facility is located in close proximity to the surrounding neighborhood; consequently, odor control was one of the most important factors in the design. The odor control system was designed to provide two levels of treatment. Each system was isolated from the other and had its own specifically designed control system. Design documents were approved by NJDEP in March 1991. Construction was begun later that year and was substantially complete by the end of 1994.
