Abstract:

Sixteen years of annual surveys demonstrate that the channel of Powder River expands at high flows and contracts at low flows. Channel contraction is associated with the formation of benches at the margin of the active bed. Numerical modeling studies suggest that channel contraction and bench formation are 3-dimensional processes that are strongly influenced by channel curvature and advective suspended sediment transport.
