Abstract:

A numerical model which determines the geometry of a threshold channel was recently developed (Diplas and Vigilar, 1992). This is important in the design of irrigation canals, channelization schemes, as well as for flow regulation. However, the applicability of this model is limited since it does not allow for sediment transport, which is an essential feature of natural streams and rivers. The numerical scheme is thus modified to predict the geometry of channels with a mobile, flat bed, and curving banks composed of particles that are all in a state of incipient motion.
