Abstract:

LaPlace valve stroking to control water hammer is applied in complex piping systems with friction and without friction. Two types of system are analyzed. The law of operation of the valves is determined so that the residual transients are eliminated at the end of the valve operation. LaPlace valve stroking transfers the water hammer from junction to junction. Propson, 1972 proposed the term 'passive systems'. The method of characteristics did not permit the solution of this kind of systems because of the numerical adjustment of the celerities according to Chaudhry, 1987. It is necessary an analytical solution. The solution of a frictionless passive branching system is presented in this paper. The LaPlace transform and the perturbation theory are used by LaPlace valve stroking. It does not use the method of characteristics.
