Abstract:

Channel geometry measurements can be used to estimate various streamflow characteristics at ungaged stream locations. Channel cross section dimensions and sediment size distributions were measured at stream reaches near 36 U.S. Geological Survey gaging stations in the glaciated highlands of New Hampshire and Vermont. Regression relations are established between measures of various streamflow characteristics (ie. mean annual flow, mean annual flood, Q2, Q10 and Q100) and channel dimensions (ie. cross sectional area, width and depth) at bankfull stage. Bankfull width and cross sectional area display strong correlations to all streamflow characteristics analyzed, while bankfull depth exhibits a weak correlation. Comparing regressions on drainage basin area with channel geometry methods suggest that the latter provide a more accurate means of estimating selected floodflow statistics in New Hampshire and Vermont.
