Abstract:

The accuracy of four one-dimensional flood routing methods is assessed for extreme floods in various mountain river settings. This preliminary assessment focusses on the prediction of peak stage for natural and dam break floods. Predicted peak stages from each model are compared with those computed using a two-dimensional model for various hypothetical channel configurations. The eventual goal of the study is to develop guidelines for the use of flood routing techniques in conducting and interpreting incremental damage assessments for dam safety evaluation.
