Abstract:

A modelling approach has been established for the activated biofiltration/activated sludge (ABF/AS) process. This approach indicates that ABF/AS systems can be considered as a variation of the activated sludge process, in which the biocell functions as a high-rate reactor, providing oxygen transfer and contact between soluble organics in the wastewater and the biomass recycled from the downstream aeration basin. This modelling approach provides for the first time a tool for the rational (rather than empirical) design of new ABF/AS facilities, as well as for the operation of existing systems.
