Abstract:

Operating data from eight, full-scale, single-sludge, biological nutrient removal (BNR) wastewater treatment facilities in Florida were collected and evaluated. Three types of BNR facilities were evaluated: A2/O Process, 5-stage BardenphoTM Process, and oxidation ditches preceded with anaerobic/anoxic selectors. One year of operating data were examined for each facility. All facilities met stringent effluent requirements of 5, 5, and 3 mg/L for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended solids (TSS), and total nitrogen (TN). Facilities which had an effluent total phosphorus (TP) limit of 1 mg/L also consistently met the required level of removal. Oxidation ditches preceded with anaerobic/anoxic selectors were found to be as reliable and effective as the conventional BNR systems.
