Abstract:

The site evaluation and settlement analysis performed for the two tallest buildings in the world currently under construction, are described. The site evaluation resulted in shifting building locations to facilitate minimizing differential settlement. Two full scale 30,000 kN instrumented bored pile load tests are evaluated to determine foundation design parameters. An elastic soil modulus back-calculated from the pile load test results compared reasonably to the average rebound reload modulus from an extensive in-situ pressuremeter testing program performed at representative borehole locations. The rationale for the foundation solution of a raft on variable length post-grouted bored piles (or barrettes) is outlined and the results from the SAP90 computer program used to model the foundation subsoil system is presented, as well as a discussion of the selection of the appropriate modulus values used in the computer program. The treatment of underlying limestone cavities and overlying slump zones to help assure substrata deformation properties consistent with foundation design assumptions is briefly described.
