Abstract:

The traditional approach based on the semi-logarithmic representation of volume change data is known to work relatively well for prediction of ground settlements. This approach has been adopted into the framework of many advanced models as the underlying law for isotropic compression and swelling. The present paper examines the shortcomings of the above approach and proposes an alternative formulation which gives more reasonable agreement with experimental data. It is also shown herein that proposed relations can ensure a physically meaningful limit of maximum volumetric strain and use fewer parameters.
