Abstract:

The pore pressure response and settlement during the construction of Nanhua dam were studied by several methods, including Hilf's method, laboratory stress path simulation and numerical analysis. Comparison of predicted values with those monitored in the field shows that reasonably good prediction at various stages of construction can be achieved. Comparison and calibration of predicted values with those of the field observation in the early stage of construction are essential. This enables the prediction of future performance with confidence and avoids difficult and costly remedial measures at later stages of construction.
