Abstract:

Terzaghi's concept of settlement analysis included comparison of prediction with reality and investigation of the causes of the differences. Present usage is often limited to prediction. The predicted settlement, whether based on subsurface investigation and calculation or on precedent, must be compared to valid criteria; unfortunately this is often not done. Complying with generally accepted practice should not blind the geotechnical engineer to unique site geology.
