Abstract:

This paper describes how the software Mathcad was used for hydraulic design of three pump stations (i.e. select pumps and size forcemains). The pump stations are part of a complete stormwater collection and treatment system needed by an industrial site to achieve compliance with the site National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. The design required repeated analysis of over 200 hydraulic conditions. A mathematical model of the system was developed and a Mathcad document prepared using Mathcad's external file read, conditional `if,' matrix math, solve block, text, and graphics features. The Mathcad document provided an interactive and computationally strong design tool that allowed easy evaluation of `what if's' and rapid convergence to final design. All calculations were fully documented with text and graphs were provided to visually display results.
