Abstract:

The Bureau of Reclamation's (Reclamation) original challenge, to settle the West and establish an agricultural base, has been met. Further, Reclamation's role has been evolving from that of water development to water management. Reclamation's incorporation of efficient water management practices has been most exemplified by programs beginning in the 1960s and continuing today. In addition, recent legislation has emphasized water conservation. The water conservation program goals include providing a source of water to meet a diversity of needs. There are a number of strategies for accomplishing this program.
