Abstract:

This paper reports the results of an evaluation research study of the cost-effectiveness of water-conserving, residential retrofit plumbing devices. By means of a 'quasi-experimental,' equivalent groups design, the effects of such retrofit devices on water and energy savings in multi-family apartments were studied. Installation of the devices was found associated with a water savings of 27% and a savings in natural gas of from 12% to 14% per month. Survey data revealed that sizeable majorities were 'very or somewhat satisfied' with the devices. These findings suggest that retrofit plumbing devices are cost-effective, result in substantial water and energy savings, and receive approbation from users.
