Abstract:

Water Resources Planning can be associated with short term or long term projects. Civil Engineers can develop plans for any number of eventualities, be they normal expected events or unwanted extreme events. However, water resources managers must make the call when the changing circumstances dictate that the time for action has come in order to protect the public interests. A rapid increase in population in the late 1980's has prompted management of the water providers in Southern Nevada to sound the alert and begin planning for a new source of water. Alternatives considered reach far and wide and all offers are being considered. While near term solutions bring promise of some breathing space, what long term solutions are needed? The future promises to provide ample exciting and challenging times for Civil Engineers.
