Abstract:

Several airfield improvement projects are currently underway at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac), many of which are being constructed using cement concrete pavement. Due to the high aircraft traffic volume at sea-Tac, a substantial portion of the pavement construction work must be accomplished during off-peak (nighttime) hours in accordance with complex construction phasing plans. Some of the new cement concrete pavement must be returned to service within a few hours after placement, while other pavement must be constructed in runway and taxiway safety areas, immediately adjacent to pavement that must be returned to service within a few hours. This paper discusses the project formulation, pavement design development, special cement concrete mix design development, project specifications, construction phasing considerations, construction techniques, and b id information for two 1994 construction projects involving replacement of runway, taxilane and terminal apron pavement under nighttime conditions.
