Design of Half-Through or Pony Truss Bridges Using Square or Rectangular Hollow Structural Sections

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Spatial, Lattice and Tension Structures

Abstract:

The initial part of this paper will outline some of the research, testing, and investigation which has been done on half-through truss bridges. This research is primarily concerned with two items: 1. Design of the top chord of the truss considering out-of-plane buckling problems. 2. Design strength and stiffness requirements for the 'U-frame' formed by the truss web members and the bridge floor beams. The second part of the paper will outline Continental Bridges' design approach to 'pony' trusses. Referencing the above-mentioned research findings, the paper outlines Continental's approach to determining appropriate K-factors for design of the top chord as well as strength and stiffness design of the 'U-frame' members. The final part of the paper is a discussion of some of the connection design ramifications of a half-through truss structure fabricated with square or rectangular hollow structural sections. The connection primarily discussed here will be the one between the truss web members and the floor beams. This connection has design strength requirements for bending moments due to lateral support requirements of the top chord in a 'pony' truss bridge.
