Abstract:

This paper addresses the technical aspects related to the use of high strength shotcrete and concrete on the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project. 7,000 psi shotcrete and 8,000 psi concrete are extensively recommended for the cut-and-cover construction of the SSC facilities. The superior properties of such high strength shotcrete and concrete make it possible to accommodate several design and site parameters which control the function and size of the different components of the project. To ensure consistent production, specifications for methods of conveying, placing, and curing were developed and several quality control measures were established.
