Innovative Design of Steel Gable Frames

by Thomas Sputo, (M.ASCE),

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Structures Congress XII

Abstract:

Common wisdom holds that conventionally designed gable frames fabricated from rolled sections cannot compete with metal building system frames fabricated from plate and bar stock, from a cost standpoint. The author has recently joined forces with a small fabricator/erector to debunk this viewpoint. In competitive bidding, this fabricator/erector has recently been able to supply five (5) gable frame buildings (frame, purlins, and girts), fabricated from rolled sections, at a substantially lower price than any metal building system supplier. (Figure 1.) The largest building had a span of over 33 meters (108 feet). This was made possible by utilizing several innovative design and fabrication concepts.
