Abstract:

The paper presents a computer program designed as a teaching aid for structural analysis and finite element courses. The main objective of the program is to illustrate major steps and computer techniques utilized in these courses. This has been achieved by specific data structure, which tests the students understanding, by the error diagnostics and by graphics simulation of the aggregation process of the global stiffness matrix. Computer output includes detailed explanation of the major steps of the solution process. The element library of the program contains a beam element, 2-D and 3-D truss elements, and 2-D frame and grid elements. The program has been developed as a part of a Computer Aided Learning (CAL) tutoring system.
