Abstract:

This investigation focuses on the thermal response of two objects under medium-intensity continuous-wave (CW) laser irradiation: (1) a homogeneous slab and (2) a complex electronic component, a flat planar spiral antenna. An analytical solution was found for the homogeneous slab under laser irradiation. The analytical solution is helpful for those conditions where a numerical solution is difficult to achieve and for validating the numerical models. Four numerical models of the antenna under laser irradiation were developed. These were used to determine if one-, two- or three-dimensional models were required to adequately predict the temperature profile in the antenna. Temperature predictions from the four numerical models were compared to experimental data.
