Abstract:

This paper discusses relevant issues concerning the design and performance of cubical lunar modules. Previously, these modules have shown to be a possible solution for living and working quarters for a lunar base. Prefabricated on earth and assembled on the moon, these versatile structures can be arranged to provide optimal layouts. Failure mechanisms and ultimate loading conditions are evaluated for the modules. This is done to provide uniform safety levels, while minimizing weight. Critical components are identified and design details are described for future development. The results of this evaluation provide an optimal module framing system to assist future efforts for the final design of such modules.
