Abstract:

Report on Ship Channel Design (ASCE Manuals and Reports on Engineering Practice No. 80) was prepared by the Task Committee on Ship Channel Design for the Committee on Waterways, Waterways, Ports, Coastal, and Ocean Division to provide an overview of the design process and identify the studies usually needed for a ship channel project. The complexity of ship channel navigation projects involves the civil engineer in many different areas of research such as: hydraulic and weather conditions, vessel motions, commodity movements, dredging and disposal activities, economic and benefit studies, and environmental and cultural impact evaluations. Three case histories are presented in detail. In addition, a list of supplemental publications is provided for the civil engineer needing more information on the various issues concerning the development of ship channel projects.
