Abstract:

Due to technical difficulties related to the control and measurement of the suction in unsaturated soils, few experimental data on the mechanical behavior of those soils exits. The paper shows some results of a study made with a new osmotic controlled suction apparatus, in order to better identify the elasto-plastic behavior of an unsaturated silt. Therefore , special attention was given to volume changes and to compressive-dilatant behavior during shear, as a function of both suction and confining stress. An increase of both stiffness and strength with suction is shown, as well as the predominant effect of the soil compressibility, which is a function of the suction. A volumetric criterion is proposed in order to distinguish between elastic and plastic behavior.
