Abstract:

Results of six full-scale compression loading tests at four sites in the Dallas area are considered. Compressive strengths (qc) of the rock varied considerably (in the range of 0.75 - 3 MPa). A decreasing ratio of maximum unit perimeter load transfer (fmax) to qc, although the ratios were much lower than those for the Melbourne Mudstone at all vales of qc. A complex combination of borehole roughness, shearing strength of the parent material and degradation of the soft rock to soil during drilling (termed 'smear') contribute to the values of the ratio.
