Abstract:

The design characteristics for 21st century fixed guideway transit are discussed. A system concept responsive to passengers' needs is envisioned. The concept ignores traditional boundaries between current transit modes by utilizing characteristics from light rail transit (LRT), heavy rail, automated guideway transit (AGT), and commuter rail. It offers, for example, not only express service along a mainline, but also local off-line stations. It suggests common hardware for both manual street-running and driverless express branches of a system. Some of the hardware performance standards needed for the concept are discussed and the practicality of the design parameters required for the off-line station operations is investigated.
