Abstract:

Earthquake occurrences cannot be accurately predicted or prevented, but their damaging effects can be analyzed and possibly reduced by utilizing the available geologic and geographic information. Modern geographic information system (GIS) technology provides a powerful tool for managing the data, for interfacing with external analysis programs, and for presenting the results in a manner useful for disaster planning, hazard mitigation, and rehabilitation strategy comparison. In this summary paper, the flexible GIS analysis framework is briefly discussed and a simple example is presented to illustrate a partial application of the methodology in the San Francisco Bay region.
