Abstract:

This paper describes the results of experimental and analytical studies of mortar coating delamination of prestressed of concrete cylinder pipe. Coating delamination resulting from radial tension between coating and core and from internal pressure are considered. The results of laboratory and field tests on the radial tensile strength of coating and the results of hydrostatic pressure tests performed as a part of this study are presented and discussed along with the results of previous industry tests where delamination was observed. The paper are includes analytical procedures for predicting the radial tension between the coating and the core and the results of the finite-element analyses performed to evaluate the radial tension caused by such factors as shrinkage and the radial expansion of wire due to a prestress loss. Recommendations for design and precautionary measures for curing and installation of the pipe are proposed.
