Abstract:

The main function of columns primarily is to support axial loads both under and after repeated lateral loading from earthquakes. A definition of the story drift limit in any structural type should be provided based on a unified concept. When columns are subjected to seismic loads, column efficiency is reduced by crushing of concrete or local buckling of steel, increasing axial deformation and leading to collapse. A proposal on story drift limit is therefore described in this paper based on physical phenomena in common for all structural types.
