Abstract:

A new approach is described for the design of stud shear connectors, in composite steel and concrete beams that are subjected to vehicular loads, which allows for the interaction between the strength of the shear connection and the fatigue loads that are applied to the shear connection. The new procedure can be used in a design mode, in which case the strength of the shear connection required to resist the static loads has to be increased to allow for reductions in strength due to fatigue loads. The procedure can also be used in an analysis mode, in which case the residual strength of the shear connectors in an existing structure can be determined.
