Abstract:

This paper deals with improvemental operations of the selective withdrawal facilities as one of the comprehensive technics for shortening the turbid water stay after floods flown into Hitotsuse Reservoir. The Hitotsuse Dam Reservoir, located at the center part of Kyushu District in Japan and used exclusively for electric power generation, has a height of 130 m, a catchment area of 415 km2, a total capacity of 216 million m3, an utility depth of 30 m and a maximum power generating discharge of 137 m3/ s. Moreover, the dam is equipped with an emergency outlet tube under the lower intake with a capacity of 121 m3/s. The problems of turbid water have occurred in the downstream river since the completion of the dam in 1963. To cope with the problems, selective intake facilities were, first in Japan, built in 1974 and have been successfully operated. A serious turbid water problem, however, occurred after a large flood in 1989 under the circumstances that the district people were much concerned about the environmental issues. So, more effective technique for further shortening the period of turbid water discharge were urgently required.
