Abstract:

Treated tanker ballast water is discharged form Alyeska Pipeline Service Company's ballast water treatment facility through a multiport diffuser into Port Valdez, Alaska. The discharge is required in the NPDES permit to comply with water quality regulations for aromatic hydrocarbons. This paper presents the methods, results, and insights on effluent plume behavior obtained from two dye dispersion studies conducted to help evaluate compliance with the water quality regulations.
