Abstract:

Proper design of drop structures can prevent failure due to scour at upstream structures, like bridges. An important aspect of drop-structure design is the prediction of the local scour that will occur downstream of the drop structure. Predictions of local scour obtained from applying four equations to two sets of hydraulic conditions that have occurred in channelization projects in Arizona are compared. The prediction of each equation is discussed in terms of the conditions under which it was developed, and how the predictive ability may be impacted if those conditions are not met. Other considerations that engineers should be cognizant of when analyzing local scour, are also introduced: duration of design event, sediment supply to the local scour hole, and armoring of the scour hole.
