Abstract:

Small scale structures in a stably stratified two-layer flow are investigated. The flow configuration has the initial velocity interface displaced with respect to the density interface. The small scale and the large scale interaction results in a slowly evolving flow state in which turbulence dominates the high velocity layer and the internal wave dominates the low velocity layer. The gradient Richardson number is a relevant parameter for characterizing these regions.
