Abstract:

Historically, Oklahoma has received many severe rainfall and flooding events due to hurricanes hitting the coast of Florida and moving to the Gulf Coast area. One such event occurred during September 29 through October 4, 1986 from Hurricane Payne. About 20 to 22 inches of rain fell over half the area of Oklahoma during this hurricane. This amount was more than half the rainfall expected during one full year. Major damages, exceeding $300 million, occurred in the Arkansas River basin due to flooding. The frequency of this flooding varied from 50 to 500 years in the Cimarron, Arkansas and Carney rivers. This paper presents a field investigation of the scour around bridge piers during high stages of the flood in the Cimarron. Methods of measuring water depth and scour depth are documented along with scour profiles for the 1986 flood.
