Abstract:

The New Jersey Department of Transportation has undertaken an ambitious scour evaluation program for the existing waterway bridges in the state. The methodology developed and utilized as part of the screening and prioritization phase of the program involved the rating of key factors related to a bridge's potential vulnerability to scour damage. In addition, an overall numerical rating system was utilized as a means of comparing the bridges and establishing priorities for additional studies on scour susceptible bridges.
