Abstract:

Unmeasured and total sediment discharges were computed for 107 sets of data from the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers and their major tributaries. Unmeasured loads were generally small except for cases with low velocities, shallow flows, and coarse bed sediments. Unit sand discharges vary as the fifth power of mean velocity, and are predicted reasonably well with the Engelund-Hansen equation. Colby's graphical relations for unit sand discharge over-estimate the sand loads by a factor of two.
