Abstract:

The Santa Clara Valley Water District's Coyote Dam faced three major concerns: siltation of the existing outlet; a fault that crosses the existing outlet pipe; and the dam toe and the downstream end of the outlet pipe were submerged in a plunge pool. A new outlet works combining a unique combination of features (including a tunnel with articulated joints at the fault crossing, sized to flow 1/3 full at the design flow) was utilized to resolve these problems.
