Abstract:

Sedimentation reduces the useful life of a reservoir. The physical processes of flushing sediment are not well-understood. Flushing processes can be classified into two categories: local flushing and drawdown flushing. The latter is more effective to initiate large-scale sediment movement. For noncohesive sediment, dimensional analysis was used to establish a regression formula to estimate the erosion depth for local flushing in front of the sluice gate. Using a one-dimensional simplified model and a two-dimensional mobile bed model, the drawdown flushing can be simulated to predict bed evolution in a reservoir.
